Reheating pasta sauce can be a nightmare, especially cream-based sauces. You’d think just throw in the microwave on the stove stir every once in a while and it’s good, but unfortunately sauces can burn to the pot and once burnt to the pot and stirred you can actually mix the burnt sauce throughout your entire sauce ruining the batch. So the question posed how is the best way to reheat pasta sauces? Spaghetti Works is here to help you out.

How to Reheat Tomato-based Pasta Sauce

For the best quality of reheating a pasta sauce that is tomato-based (like our original, meat, chili, or spicy Italian sauces) is in a pot. This is one of the simpler ones to reheat since it’s less likely to burn than cream-based sauces. Simply follow these instructions and you’ll have fresh tomato-based sauce in no time.

  • Pour sauce into a saucepan/pot on medium-high heat
  • Bring to a boil on medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  • Once boiling reduce heat to low and simmer for about 10 minutes with no lid, stirring occasionally.
  • You will notice your pasta sauce has thickened and reduced a little bit. That means it is ready.

Notes for reheating via stove-top.

  1. You can add extra spices or meat to sauces anytime before simmering. You will want to add in before the simmering portion as this will add more flavor than just dumping in the spices or meat last minute.
  2. You can add water, skim milk, or broth if sauce is too thick for your liking.

How to Reheat Cream-based Pasta Sauces. (Alfredo, Pesto, Beer Cheese)

How to reheat Alfredo, Beer Cheese or a cream-based sauce using a double boiling method

Follow the instructions below and you’ll have Spaghetti Works quality cream-based sauce in no time.

  • Add around 2-3 inches of water to saucepan/pot and bring to a boil. Place sauce in a mixing bowl that can rest on pot.
  • Once boiling, reduce heat on stove to low and place mixing bowl with sauce over the now simmering water.
  • Stir sauce with whisk frequently for about 5 minutes.
    • Note you don’t need to stir all 5 minutes, we’d recommend about 15 second for each 45 minutes of sitting
  • You’ll want the sauce to be around 165 F, once sauce is at temperature remove the bowl with sauce from saucepan/pot and stir constantly and vigorously until temperature of sauce drops to 150 F.
